All you need to know before applying to MEP10 contest
Any PhD student or PhD enrolled in a doctoral school located in the European Union in 2020 or 2021 performing a PhD thesis in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanics of Materials Engineering can apply for this contest. Co-tutelle PhD students between a EU doctoral school and another non-european institution are accepted. There are no restrictions regarding the age or the nationality of the candidate.
Its objective is to choose the best 3 video presentations in English of an experimental procedure used during the execution of the thesis work by a PhD student in the field of Mechanical Engineering or mechanics of materials. The candidate must create a video with educational/technical/scientific content intended for engineers and scientists belonging to his specialty explaining an experimental procedure that he followed or developed in his PhD thesis project in 10 minutes in English language. He is asked to present the context in which he uses / he creates this procedure, what is the objective of the manipulation, present the material used, the steps and adjustments to be made, and finally how he obtains good results. All candidates selected to compete will have their videos broadcast in OpenAccess exclusively on the Knowledge and Skills KS-Portal© platform.
- The 1st award is a MacBook Air 13" Retina and a 500 euros voucher with 3 years validity usable to get access to KS-Portal content and services. - The 2nd and 3rd awards are a 500 euros voucher attributed to each winner with 3 years validity usable to get access to KS-Portal content and services.
You can download the legal notice of the rules in French by clicking on the link at the bottom of this page. The rules of the contest are deposited at: SELARL ACTA - PIERSON et ASSOCIES whose bailiff officer is located on the following address: 15 rue de Sarre BP 15126 57074 METZ Cedex 3 FRANCE.
You are free to choose the subject of your experimental process as far as it concerns mechanical engineering or mechanics of materials. Here are some examples : - Experiments related to surface integrity : residual stresses measurement, roughness measurement, microstructure characterization, etc. - Experiments related to mechanical behavior characterization and constitutive modeling : compression and extension tests, micro hardness tests, resilience tests, DIC for strain measurement, etc. - Experiments related to manufacturing processes monitoring : forces monitoring, energy monitoring, temperature monitoring, tool wear measurement, etc. - Experiments related to the sustainability of the mechanical components : fatigue tests, crash tests, etc.
The jury is composed of 5 members from the editorial board of Knowledge & Skills (see about us page) and guest university professors and senior engineers from international institutions. Their names will be communicated once the applications closed.
Every assigned jury attributes to the candidate a score from 0 to 20. At the end of the contest, the candidates are classified basing on the total score they get out of 100 points. The scoring out of 20 points is based on the following criteria: 1- (6 points) The clarity and accuracy of the speech (technical language, script in English) 2- (6 points) The pedagogy followed (simplifying explanations, fluidity of the presentation of the steps) 3- (6 points) Originality (Be creative in the development of your video, we especially do not want boring static slides accompanied by a monotonous speech, make it happen and show your enthusiasm) 4- (2 points) The fact that the candidate created / invented this experimental procedure will be taken into account in the score awarded. N.B: The use of brand new or extremely innovative experimental equipment is not an evaluation criterion, we want to give all doctoral students a chance, regardless of the budget allocated to their research.
Submissions are received between 01/07/2021 and 30/09/2021. The result will be published and the rewards attributed during October 2021.
Yes, as far as you are the creator of the video, all the credit goes to you and to the institution to which you belong, which provided you with the material you used to perform your experiment. However, be careful about the following points: - Be sure to get all the necessary authorizations to record your video (speak to your supervisor and to the lab head, if your experiment is sponsored by an external entity, inform your sponsors) - Be sure to respect the privacy of others and the licences rights, and do not use background music submitted to tiers copyright - Do not publish your video elsewhere without the authorization of knowledge & Skills once published inside the library catalog of KS-Portal for a duration of 3 years. By submitting your application, you accept this clause. You can get the authorization by sending an e-mail to email@example.com
Yes, all submissions accepted to compete, so accepted to be published on KS-Portal and so, on the web video journal of Knowledge and Skills (ISSN 2800-2083), will be attributed the doi number and address https://doi.org/10.53229/k.and.s.2021.XXXXXX
