MEP 10" - 1st edition for PhD students in Mechanical Engineering

Knowledge & Skills aims to promote the scientific knowledge and talent of PhD engineers on an international scale.   This year, being the first of its activity and to celebrate the opening of KS-Portal©, Knowledge and Skills is organizing the 1st edition of a contest competition for PhD students & PhDs in the discipline of Mechanical Engineering, enrolled in/in co-tutelle with doctoral schools in the European Union during 2020 or 2021.   This competition is called: My Experimental Process in 10'' (1st edition)   Its objective is to choose the best 3 video presentations in English of an experimental procedure used during the execution of the thesis work by a PhD student in the field of Mechanical Engineering or mechanics of materials.  The candidate must create a video with educational/technical/scientific content intended for engineers and scientists belonging to his field explaining an experimental procedure that he followed or developed in his PhD thesis project in 10 minutes in English language. He is asked to present the context in which he uses / he creates this procedure, what is the objective of the manipulation, present the material used, the steps and adjustments to be made, and finally how he obtains good results.  All candidates selected to compete will have their videos broadcast in OpenAccess exclusively on the Knowledge and Skills KS-Portal© platform.   The first prize to be won is a MacBook Air 13 "Retina provided by Knowledge & Skills Corporation to the PhD student who has developed the best creation judged by 5 members of a jury of university professors from international universities and senior engineering doctors. The authors of the 3 best creations will win vouchers worth 500 euros each with a validity of 3 years that can be used on KS-Portal©, the Knowledge and Skills platform.   Applications must be submitted between 01/07/2021 and 30/09/2021.  The result of the competition will be communicated via a 100% online ceremony during the month of October 2021.

You can download the legal notice of the rules in French by clicking on the link at the bottom of this page. The rules of the contest are deposited at: SELARL ACTA - PIERSON et ASSOCIES whose bailiff officer is located on the following address: 15 rue de Sarre BP 15126 57074 METZ Cedex 3 FRANCE.

Can you give examples of the video subjects that can be submitted?
Arrow icon

You are free to choose the subject of your experimental process as far as it concerns mechanical engineering or mechanics of materials. Here are some examples : - Experiments related to surface integrity : residual stresses measurement, roughness measurement, microstructure characterization, etc. - Experiments related to mechanical behavior characterization and constitutive modeling : compression and extension tests, micro hardness tests, resilience tests, DIC for strain measurement, etc. - Experiments related to manufacturing processes monitoring : forces monitoring, energy monitoring, temperature monitoring, tool wear measurement, etc. - Experiments related to the sustainability of the mechanical components : fatigue tests, crash tests, etc.

Who is the jury of MEP10?
Arrow icon

The jury is composed of 5 members from the editorial board of Knowledge & Skills (see about us page) and guest university professors and senior engineers from international institutions. Their names will be communicated once the applications closed.

What are the selection criteria?
Arrow icon

Every assigned jury attributes to the candidate a score from 0 to 20. At the end of the contest, the candidates are classified basing on the total score they get out of 100 points. The scoring out of 20 points is based on the following criteria:  1- (6 points) The clarity and accuracy of the speech (technical language, script in English)  2- (6 points) The pedagogy followed (simplifying explanations, fluidity of the presentation of the steps) 3- (6 points) Originality (Be creative in the development of your video, we especially do not want boring static slides accompanied by a monotonous speech, make it happen and show your enthusiasm)  4- (2 points) The fact that the candidate created / invented this experimental procedure will be taken into account in the score awarded.  N.B: The use of brand new or extremely innovative experimental equipment is not an evaluation criterion, we want to give all doctoral students a chance, regardless of the budget allocated to their research.
